The work of Umweltamt Graz (Environmental Agency of Graz) in Austria was awarded with bronze in the 1st category (< 219 kWh/m² per year) at European level. With the fields "air", "noise", "energy" and "waste" the environmental agency is supervising the problem areas, which are of particular importance for a city and the quality of urban life. Accelerating a sustainable city development is a main focus. With the achievement of 25% savings Umweltamt Graz is considered to be a "shining example" for other public city buildings.
The success was achieved by following measures:
- Daily "visualization" of the energy consumption via monitor for the staff
- Optimization of the heating regulation by lowering temperature on weekends and public holidays as well as using district heating
- Installation of autotimers for hot water supply and drinks machine
- Installation of switchable plug connectors to "stop Standby" parasites
- Overcoming of the inner "temptation" through consequently switching off smaller and bigger electricity users if not used
